Fort Macon was built by the Army Corp of Engineers and completed in 1834.
Active during the Civil War, the Reconstruction, and the Spanish-American War, it was finally sold to the state of North Carolina in 1924 for $1.00.
It became a state park in 1936.

The Visitor Center and Museum original wood flooring suffered damage beyond repair from Hurricane Florence.
8000 sf of Select Quarter Sawn Old Growth Heart Pine was sourced for the new flooring and WOCA Diamond Oil Active in Natural was chosen as the finish.
-
The choice to finish with WOCA Diamond Oil Active was a forethought for the busy visitor center and museum.
The park has 1.3 million visitors every year.
The floor never has to be sanded and refinished again. It can be cleaned and another coat of Diamond Oil Active applied, avoiding closing for lengthy periods of time and costly labor.
